RWANDA & UGANDA
To be allowed to spend time with the endangered Mountain Gorilla in Uganda and Rwanda is possibly the most humbling and moving experience and is usually the centerpoint for any visit to either country. However both Rwanda and Uganda offer so much more than this life-changing adventure.
For a relatively little known travel destination it packs a lot of punch! Home to the tallest mountain range in Africa it is also the source of the Nile River and shares Lake Victoria with Kenya and Tanzania. Multiple National Parks offer great game viewing by land or water, and of course there is the unforgettable gorilla trek experience as well as the opportunity to see the rare golden monkey and chimpanzees. The benefit of visiting Uganda over Rwanda is the more cost effective trek permits, the range of accommodation options to suit every budget and the established safari circuit. However it is a tougher trek – it’s called the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest with good reason!
Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, home to around 400 Mountain Gorillas, is easily accessible from the city of Kigali making it a terrific add on to most East African itineraries. The trekking altitude in Volcanoes National Park is higher, but the trekking is a little more easy going and open allowing for slightly better visibility. Of course the permits in Rwanda are considerable, double the cost of Uganda. It is also home to some of the newest and most luxurious lodges in East Africa making Rwanda the first choice for a polished trek experience with top quality accommodation. The town of Kigali is a remarkable surprise, showcasing the turbulent history of the country and the incredible strength of will of the people, their pride and their incredible optimism. Lion and Rhino have been reintroduced to Akagera National Park returning it to a big five game viewing destination, and Nyungwe National Park is one of the oldest rainforests in Africa home to chimpanzees and other primates. Rwanda will soon move from a stopover experience to a safari destination in its own right, and it is about time!
