VICTORIA FALLS

Known as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ or ‘The Smoke That Thunders’ the spectacular Victoria Falls is the largest single curtain of falling water in the world. At 1,7km (1 mile) wide the Zambezi River drops 100m into the Batoka Gorge below, releasing enormous columns of spray that can be seen for miles around. Victoria Falls is a year round destination, although water levels peak between April and June and are lowest in the drier months of October through December.

Victoria Falls forms a border between Victoria Falls Town, Zimbabwe and Livingstone, Zambia.

The town of Victoria Falls Zimbabwe lies on the southern bank of the mighty Zambezi River and is home to one of the oldest colonial hotels in the area, The Victoria Falls Hotel built in 1904. While no hotel can boast a direct view of the Falls, this grand dame offers the most spectacular view of the gorge and the bridge, worth a visit to indulge in their high tea and incredible vistas.

The town offers an incredible variety of accommodation options, from luxury lodges to budget conscious guests houses, and activities to suit the brave and bold, and of course the not-so-bold. We highly recommend a guided tour of the Falls through the rainforest as well as a sedate river cruise on the majestic Zambezi River.

Livingstone Town on the Zambian side of the Falls is named after the famous explorer Dr David Livingstone who first saw the Falls in 1855 and named it after Queen Victoria, queen of Great Britain at the time. Today remnants of the colonial life are still visible in the style of the old public buildings, but today infused and bursting with the life and colour of the Zambian culture!

Livingstone also offers guests the chance to spend time on the Zambezi and enjoy many varied activities in the town and surrounds, however one of the most popular activities is a trip to Livingstone Island, and for the very brave a swim to the very edge of the Falls at Devil’s Pool! This is a seasonal activity dependent on water levels which need to be fairly low. In the drier months it is advisable to transfer across the bridge to the Zimbabwean town of Victoria Falls and take a walk through the rainforest to view the Falls.
